This past week I got the absolute joy of watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix, and boy, oh boy, was it worth it. I quite literally watched the ENTIRE show in a single sitting; it is that good! I have no idea why I put off watching it for so long, but once I started, I just couldn’t stop.
With a storyline that draws you in and keeps you trapped within its claws, the beautiful animation, to a world that feels lived in and real, it is easily one of my top 10 anime of all time. Even though Netflix tends to put out mostly crap nowadays, sometimes we get gems like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
The Savior of Cyberpunk 2077
As most of us probably remember, Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most hyped-up games of 2020, but when it came out, it sucked. The graphics were weak, and everything felt off, but Projekt Red didn’t let that stop them. Sure, the game was released a year too early, but they worked hard to improve it.
Even still, it would not have exploded like it has if it wasn’t for the masterpiece and brilliant marketing decision that was Edgerunners. It makes people want to experience the game, to explore a harsh and unforgiving world filled with lore and cool tattoos.
But enough about the game; you are here for the Netflix show. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells the story of a young boy who lives in the slums of Night City with his single mom. Life is difficult for them, but they at least have each other. His mom wants him to work his way up through one of the mega tech corps, but David wants to become a cyberpunk.
As things take a terrible turn, he hooks up with a group of edge runners and becomes an integral part of their gang. They become his family, and he falls in love with one of them, a girl named Lucy. But not everything is as it seems, and in Night City, death and horror are always just around the corner.
Now, I don’t want to spoil the show for you, because you should go watch it for yourself. Be warned, though. It does have some nudity and an awfully large amount of blood and ripped body parts. Also, you will probably cry at least once. The story and plot are just so gripping that you can’t help but feel for these characters.
