A 9,200 sq foot mansion in San Diego going for only $668,000? It almost seems too good to be true, right? Well, that is because it is. Beginning in 1974, Heaven’s Gate is one of the most famous cults to ever exist in human history. Most anyone who knows about cults knows the name Heaven’s Gate and can hold a great conversation about it. Led by Charles Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, Heaven’s Gate believed they were going to ascend to T.E.L.A.H, their version of a heaven. They winded up committing suicide by eating applesauce laced with barbituates and placing bags over their heads.

What Happened to the Heaven’s Gate Mansion?
Shortly after the Heaven’s Gate members committed suicide, the mansion was put up for sale. The previous owner, from whom Applewhite had been renting, had to foreclose the house after being arrested for fraud. Due to media attention disrupting the neighborhood, the collective neighborhood decided to purchase the home before bulldozing it. Afterward, they built a new house over it and renamed their street Paseo Victoria.
