Where Was My Friend Dahmer Filmed?

My Friend Dahmer is one of the best-known Jeffrey Dahmer films ever created and covers his teenage years leading up to his first murder.

Filmed in 2017, it was written and directed by Marc Meyers and was based on a 2012 comic of the same name created by John “Derf” Backderf.

Backderf had been friends with Dahmer during high school in the 70s but fell out with him when the murders began in 1978.

Since Dahmer grew up and went to high school in Ohio, the movie was filmed in Bath and Middleburg Heights, Ohio, and even included actual footage shot in Jeffrey’s childhood home.

For the school shots, Marc Meyers was hoping to use Jeffrey’s high school, Reverse High, for the school shots, but the request was turned down.

The film stars Ross Lynch as teen Jeffrey Dahmer, Alex Wolff as John “Derf” Backderf, Liam Koeth as Jeffrey’s brother, Dallas Roberts as Dahmer’s father, and Anne Heche as Dahmer’s mother.

While the movie stays fairly true to Backderf’s actual experiences with Dahmer, several scenes, including the fishing scene, were added in, even though he had not been present for that.

Ross Lynch’s performance was spot on in My Friend Dahmer, leaving the audience feeling uncomfortable, but not entirely sure why.

Even though you know what Dahmer becomes, it is easy to forget that as you become engrossed in the film, waiting to see what comes next.

After its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 21, 2017, it was picked up by FilmRise, who released it in limited theaters on November 3 later that year.

In December, a wider theatrical release came out, bringing in $1.5 million at the box office. Since then, it has received high ratings on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, with a 7/10 and 86%, respectively.
